As we enter December, let\u2019s reflect on an important climate milestone we\u2019ve overlooked this year.<\/p>\n

Natural resources have their limits, and this year, before autumn even reached us, the world had already exhausted them on August 2nd, known as Earth Overshoot Day.<\/a><\/p>\n

In Italy, the date was even earlier, May 15th. While Italian exports, from fashion to food, are famous worldwide, we can safely say that if the world adopted the Italian approach to climate, we would collectively need almost three planets to survive our habits. <\/p>\n

Where does this crucial date come from? Earth Overshoot Day is a date calculated by the Global Footprint Network,<\/a> an international organization that uses scientific tools to measure the number of days Earth’s biological capacity is sufficient to cover humanity’s Ecological Footprint. <\/p>\n

This year, while many of us were on vacation, the world has gone far beyond its ecological debt. And we can no longer postpone fundamental actions to reduce our emissions; we must consider the legacy we are leaving our children and future generations. Yes, today. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Understanding resource depletion and its impact<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In our daily lives, we may not have noticed many changes before and after August 2nd. We may wonder how we exhausted our resources when we still see them all around us. <\/p>\n

While it is true that the change is difficult to immediately notice in our daily lives, the earth has exceeded its limit in regenerating enough natural resources<\/strong> to compensate for the impact we have had on it.<\/p>\n

What does this mean?<\/em><\/p>\n

This means we have fished more than the ocean can reproduce in a year, inevitably condemning some marine species to extinction.<\/p>\n

This means we have consumed more freshwater than rivers can renew, leaving an ever-increasing number of communities in some regions without enough clean water.<\/p>\n

This means that, through our deeply ingrained consumption habits, we have released more carbon into the atmosphere than our forests and oceans can absorb, which will inevitably raise global temperatures and lead to extreme weather events that will wreak havoc in cities.<\/p>\n

It means we have converted too much land into urban or agricultural areas, grown more food than the land can support, and neglected the consequences for biodiversity.<\/p>\n

It means a lot.<\/p>\n

It also means a lot to disadvantaged populations <\/strong>in some developing countries, who contribute minimally to climate emissions but face the consequences of developed countries’ climate habits. Consider the people of the Polynesian islands<\/a> who face the real prospect of the ground beneath their feet sinking, or the droughts in East Africa <\/a>that are forcing populations to migrate. <\/p>\n

While we may not see these resources being depleted around us overnight, these populations are certainly sensing it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But for many Italian SMEs, these numbers feel distant\u2014tied to multinational contexts and difficult to apply to local realities. Many companies ask us every day what all of this actually means for them, within the reality of a local business, often operating in more traditional sectors. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/article>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Earth Overshoot Day is not a question of blame, but a call to action. It urges us to change our trajectory so as to avoid difficult conversations with our children, who might otherwise be forced to endure daily heatwaves, floods, storms, and droughts in an uninhabitable world. <\/p>\n

What can we do to bring forward that August 2nd date next year?<\/p>\n
